What To Do About Teeth Whitening Sensitivity

Teeth whitening is increasing in fame in recent years. It is no longer necessary to make several trips to your dentist and pay exorbitant amounts of money to get a bright smile. Professional treatments are much more affordable and at home whitening kits are also safe and effective.

Most every teeth whitening systems or kits contain the similar chemical to make the whitening effect. The chemical baramide peroxide is most commonly used, and sometimes hydrogen peroxide. These chemicals, in their full concentration and even at 35% concentration can cause burns on the gums or skin. When used in dental whitening it is used in a 30% concentration and most often less than that.

Point to note, even the little amounts used in at home kits is good enough to effect teeth whitening sensitivity. All kits, and dentists make it clear that tooth sensitivity is a possible side effect of using the products. Fortunately this side effect is always only temporary. However, this doesn’t solve the problem of what to do about it when you have it.

Professional tooth whitening sessions are done with a stronger level of the chemical used over a shorter time. This can sometimes be too much for those with a tendency toward tooth sensitivity. If this is the case, the session will be shortened and another one or few can be scheduled to complete the treatment.

During teeth whitening sensitivity experienced when using an at home kit, a similar solution is recommended. It is best to decrease the amount of time that you wear the teeth trays or strips. Sometimes you can use them once a day and just wear them for twice as many days in a row. If your teeth are still sensitive, you can stop altogether, or try wearing them once every few days. This should not be too much for sensitive teeth. You will still experience a similar level of whitening, but it will just take longer. This might be a good thing, as the color change will be so gradual that people will be unlikely to notice a sudden change.

If you have teeth whitening sensitivity, it will do you good utilize a toothpaste that is made for sensitive teeth. Also, staying away from foods that are too hot or too cold until the sensitivity goes away is a good idea.

For those whose teeth are naturally sensitive might need to consider carefully before taking on a tooth whitening regime. Consulting with your dentist is also a good idea.

Good news to bear in mind though that the teeth whitening sensitivity is temporary and will go away. Determine if it is worth it to you to suffer through the sensitivity to have that bright white smile that you’ve been wanting. And remember, that spreading your whitening sessions out over time might effectively stop the sensitivity.
